Switzerland is a mountainous Central European country, home to numerous lakes,
villages and the high peaks of the Alps. An education in Switzerland will take you far
outside the walls of the library. With its diverse and picturesque landscapes, cultural
variety (fusing German, French and Italian traditions), top raked cities for quality of life,
innovative technological environment and high educational standards, studying abroad
in Switzerland is an experience of a lifetime. With 226,000 students registered for the
2019/2020 autumn semester, higher education is continuing to grow in Switzerland, and
the same year saw increasing numbers of women and international students in Swiss
higher education.
WHY STUDY IN SWITZERLAND
EDUCATION SYSTEM
University-level education in Switzerland follows the bachelor-master system. Like most
other European countries they adhere to the Bologna process, meaning that many
international students can easily transfer the qualifications they earn in Switzerland to
their home institutions. Like in other countries, Switzerland offers its students the
opportunity to earn a bachelor degree (180 ECTS credits or three years full-time study),
or a masters degree (90 – 120 ECTS credits, or one to two years of full-time study).
Completing a bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite for admittance to studies at master’s
level. A master’s degree and good grades are the prerequisite for pursuing studies at
the doctorate level.
BENEFITS OF STUDYING IN SWITZERLAND
WORK WHILE STUDYING
International students can take up part-time work for up to 15 hours a week during the
semester and they can work full-time during holidays. But there's a catch for non- EU/EFTA students: they can only begin working 6 months after the start of their studies.
For non-EU/EFTA students, the hiring company/employer needs to apply for a work
permit..
