The Netherlands, a country in northwestern Europe, is known for a flat landscape of
canals, tulip fields, windmills and cycling routes. Most of the areas are below sea level
and are man-made. Since the late 16th century, large areas (polders) have been
reclaimed from the sea and lakes amounting to nearly 17% of the country& current
landmass. The Netherlands covers around 41,000 square kilometers and has a
population of about 16 million. The Netherlands consists of twelve provinces of which
two of the provinces North Netherlands and South Netherlands are the most densely
populated and encompass the popular cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.
